I’m often asked… “Joey, what’s your absolute best golf exercise tip you can give me to help my game?”

The answer is brutally simple…

If you can **be consistent** with your conditioning (no matter how basic – or how elaborate it might be) – then you are implementing the single-most best principle for optimization of your game.

>> IMPORTANT: this assumes you are on a well-structured, and realistic, golf conditioning program in the first place.

Here’s what **consistency** in your conditioning gives you:

- prevents ‘fluctuations’ in muscular ability
- maintains ideal joint ‘fluidity’
- allows for optimal range of motion
- lets you practice without physical restrictions
- keeps you ‘in tune’ with your body (enhanced mind/muscle connection)
- reduces risk of injury (both acute and/or chronic)
- speeds recovery time between rounds
- increases intangible element of ‘confidence’

There are other points to add to this list – But the principle is the same. They are all optimized, enhanced or enabled by CONSISTENCY…

So, it makes all the sense in the world for you to make your golf performance conditioning program a top priority in your life. Because if you don’t – you run the very likely risk of experiencing the OPPOSITE of what you see on the list above. A price to large to pay – not only for your game – but even moreso for your overall quality of life and well-being.

If you don’t have a solid foundation for your golf conditioning routine – then it’s time for you to get it. As you know, by reading past issues of this newsletter – that foundation should be full-body flexibility. Sometimes a solid stretching routine alone is enough to take your game into a zone you never thought possible. Just like Peter Naish… read his firsthand experience here: Golf Performance Success Story

If you are already doing the Optimum Golf Flexibility DVDs – all you need to do is place priority on CONSISTENCY. But if you don’t have the DVDs yet – it’s something you should seriously consider…

Your trainer,

PS – I never get bored of success stories – so please send me yours when you start feeling all the good things happening to your body – and all the great things in your game.

How to Reduce Your Golf Handicap Through Golf Fitness

Chances are, if you’re an avid golfer, you’d love to be a single digit handicap (sdh) golfer. So what do these ’sdh’ golfers have that you don’t?

You may be thinking they’re simply “better golfers,” and that may be partially true, but odds are they are also more in tune with how their level of overall fitness (strength, flexibility, endurance) affects their ability to play a great round of golf – AND recover quickly between rounds.

Single digit handicap golfers have gone beyond ’swing technique’ and are committed to being as fit as possible for golf and the physical demands that come with the game.

They’ve developed a golf specific fitness routine that ensures that their bodies are capable of playing an enviable round of golf, with minimal risk of injury.

You too can focus on fitness and improve your golf game.

One of the first areas you need to look at is your core strength. Your core muscles are those in your torso, the ones that are critical to how well you swing the club. If your back, abdominal and shoulder muscles are not in shape they are not going to be able to support you well enough to produce an excellent swing. Getting your core muscles in shape will give you a more powerful, fluid swing, offering more distance and accuracy.

Shoulder rotation is another key area. By exercising and stretching your shoulder muscles through an expanded, but natural, range of motion you will increase your flexibility, ensuring a full swing with balanced rotation. This goes for spinal rotation as well. If you work your back muscles, consistently keeping them limber, they will enable you to more efficiently swing the club – with a predictable repetitiveness (VERY important)

The majority of single digit handicap players have full, and fluid, range of motion in their shoulders in addition to optimal hip, spine and neck flexibility.

Finally, a properly structured fitness routine improves your ‘golf’ endurance, making a long round of golf much easier to get through – and recover from. This means that your first swing of the round and your last will have the same level of control, accuracy and power… And that late-round, game killing fatigue is avoided – allowing you to keep your mental focus when it counts the most.

Becoming a single digit handicap golfer is about more than skill, it’s about preparing your body to use the skills you have, every time you pick up a club.

And more importantly – when your body is ‘fit for golf’ – it allows you to further develop your ‘golf skills’ by allowing you to get the most out of your practice time.

Loose Hips + Balanced Flexibility + Stable Core = Better Golf

Last week I was wrapping up a consulting assignment for a family here in the USA. [I occasionally open up my schedule for high end assignments - where I go into a home or a company and design their exercise facility and help them implement a custom program, specific to their needs and goals...]

The parents were both golfers – and they asked me a great question: “Joey, when did you learn to place emphasis on flexibility and bodyweight training as opposed to all these machines and weights based programs that are out there?”

Rather than write out my whole answer here – I was lucky enough to find a recent article from another golf conditioning expert – who sums it up perfectly:

Here is an excerpt from a recent article by Sean Cochran, who writes for PGATOUR.COM:

“…it is probably best to provide some background on the importance of the hips relative to the golf swing. If we review the mobility/stability pattern of human movement describe in previous articles, we learn that the hips are an integral joint in the execution of the golf swing. It is a joint requiring mobility in addition to strength from the musculature surrounding the joint.

If the hips lack mobility from limited ranges of motion or stability from insufficient strength, the mechanics of the golf swing will be directly affected. Numerous swing faults such as “over the top” in the downswing or a “loss of posture” in the back swing can be directly related to a lack of mobility or stability within the hips. It is for this reason that it is safe to say the hips can be characterized as the “kings” of the golf swing.

As a result, it is imperative within our golf fitness training program that we address the hips extensively with both mobility and stability training. The development of mobility comes through the implementation of range of motion and flexibility exercises, both of which have been covered in previous articles. Stability is developed through strength training.”
This article can be read via this link

Now – There’s more to it, as I can write a whole book on the subject – but as you and me both know, books are very hard to follow when it involves physical instruction. That’s why I created the ‘Optimum Flexibility for Golf’ DVDs

Most golfers reading this already own and are benefiting from the DVDs – But if you are one of the few who are not – then it might be time to make your move so you can write me an email like Michael here:

——– Original Message ——–

Joey,

The golf flexibility program is amazing!

Over the last summer, I could tell a huge difference in my game when I was doing the program religiously and when I would let it slide for a couple weeks. I would go from playing golf essentially pain free, to playing with a back that would ’seer’ with every shot and between shots. There was such a huge difference, that my new year’s resolution is to follow the program religiously this year because of the profound difference it made in my game.

Golf Training Aid Infomercials: Hype, Hoax or Help?

-
Over the last few years I’ve become a study of direct response TV. Not because I aspire to do the same – but rather, it gives me insights as to what golfers are looking for and what they are willing spend their money on.

Right now I’m working on two training devices (in the prototyping and patenting stage). One of these devices can surely benefit golfers – but that’s not my motivation for building it. My motivation is personal.

In short – there is no home gym unit that exists – which I am willing to put in my home. Simply because no current home gym unit on the market is conducive to my methods of exercise and fitness programming. So I’m building it myself – Once mine is done, I’ll explore the possibilities of bringing it to the public.

(The other unit is specifically for women – to be used in conjunction with one of my female specific programs – …more to tell, but not here.)

Getting back to the golf training aids on direct response TV…

I’m not here to judge or criticize (right now) – I think you are intelligent enough to know what you are seeing or hearing when watching these types of ‘presentations’ – but here’s what I will say…

Regardless of the integrity or validity of an infomercial type golf training device (and there are DOZENS of them) – none will ever come close to what the effects of a full-body, golf-specific stretching exercise program will do for your game, your body and your life.

You can try to “groove your swing” ’till you drop, you can try to “change the mechanics of your faulty swing” ’til you collapse, you can swing a weighted club ’til your back cramps up – BUT none of this will enhance to range of motion and recoverability of your muscles and joints – between holes and between rounds.

I’m not against buying new golf clubs or an intriguing new training device – BUT It makes no sense to do any of that until you are properly treating your body to the one thing it needs most: FLEXIBILITY

Don’t be one of the golfers who learns this the hard way. don’t wait til a tweak or a muscle twinge starts to turn into a nagging chronic cramp – that develops into an injury “that just happened out of the blue.” (physical therapists love golfers like this)

I’ve had the opportunity of working with many golfers in this situation.

In hindsight – if they could do it all over again – they would have started a proper stretching routine before they ever picked up a club.

The good thing is – It’s never too late to start a golf stretching program.

Be smart – be flexible,

Joey Atlas
